Dental Implants Presentation
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.
What are dental implants?
A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant.
Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants
Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Humble, Dr. Richmond and Dr. Russell are able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction – further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.
Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Drs. Humble, Richmond or Russell performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary. The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

Patient Review by Beverly T
I am so thankful for Dr. Richmond and his staff at Pacific Oral Surgery & Implants. This is the 3rd time I have had to get an implant and it has been nearly painless! I trust Dr. Richmond to do an excellent job and to be as careful as possible. He always is so considerate of my feelings and I appreciate the entire experience from the first visit to the final check-up. (They even called after my visit to make sure I didn't have any questions and that I was feeling OK). They really go the extra mile!

I could never imagined getting a dental implant as I thought that would only apply to older patients. Well, found out that I needed it after all due to a failed root canal. My first experience with the office was for the tooth extraction and it was wonderful with the IV sedation. For starting the IV line, I did not even feel the needle insertion pain with the cold spray. Thank you Dr. Humble. Then forward to a few months later after healing of the toothless area, I had the same wonderful experience with the dental implant procedure performed by Dr. Richmond. Surprisingly, I did not feel any pain, even in the recovery period after the insertion of the implant post. If I will ever need another dental implant in the future, for sure I will utilize the same office. Pricing of the dental implant procedure was overall affordable, generally less expensive than other dental offices as reported by my co-workers.

I have a certain amount of anxiety about visiting the dentist and especially for the specialized work that Dr. Richmond has performed on me. He has consistently performed the most difficult dental work with the utmost expertise and perfection. I am very sensitive to the quality of dental work that is performed on me. I won’t tolerate anything less than excellent and Dr. Richmond has exceeded my expectations every time. He has performed 3 dental implants and the most recent one was nearly painless! He is so determined to make each visit a success that he proceeds at a pace that allows him to explain what he is doing, how far along in the procedure he is and for him to be certain I am comfortable and not in any pain. I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Richmond. I trust him with my teeth and that is the best recommendation I can give anyone.
